Main Page error reports
Most issues relating to national variations of the English language have already been discussed here at length:
|
To report an error in current or upcoming Main Page content, please add it to the appropriate section below.
- Where is the error? An exact quotation of all or part of the text in question will help.
- Please offer a correction if possible.
- References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
- Time zones: The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 06:52 on 27 November 2023), not adjusted to your local time zone.
- Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not give you a faster response; it is unnecessary as this page is not protected and will in fact cause problems if used here. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
- Done? Once an error has been fixed, rotated off the Main Page or acknowledged not to be an error, the report will be removed from this page; please check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken, as no archives are kept.
- No chit-chat: Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the relevant article or project talk page.
- Please respect other editors. A real person wrote the blurb or hook for which you are suggesting a fix, or a real person noticed what they honestly believe is an issue with the blurb or hook that you wrote. Everyone is interested in creating the best Main Page possible; with the compressed time frame, there is sometimes more stress and more opportunities to step on toes. Please be civil to fellow users.
- Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, consider first attempting to fix the problem there before reporting it here if necessary. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. In addition, upcoming content is typically only protected from editing 24 hours before its scheduled appearance; in most cases, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.

- "that Stan Mataele was caught lying about his football experience, made his college team anyway and was all-state?

- The article says he was "All-California", so "all-state" is just a generic state description. It's (U.S.?) sports specific, basically an all-star team selected from players within a state. —Bagumba (talk) 20:08, 25 November 2023 (UTC)
- Okay but can we go back to linking this stuff so we have a hope of understanding it? Secretlondon (talk) 09:12, 26 November 2023 (UTC)
- We don't appear to have a link to "all-state", so we probably need to rephrase it. This is always the issue with sports that have their own vernacular which is not widely known outside the areas where they are mainly played. "... made his college team anyway, followed by the all-star California junior team", possibly? Black Kite (talk) 10:25, 26 November 2023 (UTC)
- Courtesy ping to DYK nom participants BeanieFan11 and Dahn. —Bagumba (talk) 10:36, 26 November 2023 (UTC)
- Also, he was named All-California while in junior college, so it's misleading to refer to it as a "college team", which in the US is interpreted as a 4-year college/university. Perhaps something like "...made his junior college team anyway and was
all-statevoted one of the top players in the state" —Bagumba (talk) 14:38, 26 November 2023 (UTC)- I'd be find with that or something like: ... that Stan Mataele was caught lying about his football experience but made his junior college team anyway and was voted one of the top players in the state? BeanieFan11 (talk) 14:58, 26 November 2023 (UTC)
- Works with links to American football and junior college. ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 15:03, 26 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hmmm, I had a hand in this too :-( How about: "... that Stan Mataele was caught lying about his football experience but made the team anyway?" That should be enough to attract the interest of readers. No need to pile in all sorts of details. RoySmith (talk) 16:11, 26 November 2023 (UTC)
- I do think its more interesting that he not only made the team, but became one of the top players in the state. I don't know if links to American football and junior college are necessary, though, as they seem to usually draw away viewers from the DYK topic in question. BeanieFan11 (talk) 16:49, 26 November 2023 (UTC) BTW, I'll be away for the rest of the day so you guys will have to work on developing the best wording for the hook. - ... that Stan Mataele lied about his football experience but still became one of the top players in the state? RoySmith (talk) 17:22, 26 November 2023 (UTC)
- that works, but casting my spoiler vote for Viriditas's "... that Stan Mataele faked it until he made it?". theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 17:46, 26 November 2023 (UTC)
- This is going live in a couple of hours and nobody's come up with anything better, so I went with my last suggestion. RoySmith (talk) 22:20, 26 November 2023 (UTC)
- Surely it should be "in his state" rather than "in the state" RoySmith? ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 22:27, 26 November 2023 (UTC)

General discussion
Wikipedia:Main Page history
I like using Wikipedia:Main Page history, but it has not been written for a number of days now, look at Wikipedia:Main Page history/2023 November 20. The bot owner made only few edits, one saying that the bot can't do it in retrospect (which I sort of thought anyway). What can we do? Once I'm hear: could a bot perhaps change earlier renditions which look strange, due to changes in the presentation, compare Wikipedia:Main Page history/2018 November 23 (look at the "Recents") and Wikipedia:Main Page history/2020 November 20? -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:21, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- It can be done manually fairly easily for the current main page, using special:ExpandTemplates with
{{:Main Page}}
in the input wikitext box, then copy-pasting the output into the relevant history page. I've done that for Wikipedia:Main Page history/2023 November 24, and happy to do it for a few days, until the bot starts running again. It is possible to do it retrospectively by rebuilding a copy of the main page in a sandbox, transcluding older templates (ITN needs to be done manually), but it is a time-consuming task. — Voice of Clam (talk) 08:04, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
