Everybody, regardless of their gender or skin type, can benefit from the use of face scrubs. Though most face scrubs have a variety of positive effects on your skin, their primary purpose is exfoliation.
Now, for those people who don’t have a regular skincare routine, you might be wondering what exfoliation is? Well, it is merely the process of shedding dead skin cells. This reduces the risk of clogged pores and acne while making your skin look lively and youthful.
The skin does naturally shed dead skin cells, but the problem is that the natural oil of the skin can block these dead skin cells in your pores. This leads to many skin problems like blackheads, pimples, and dull skin. Exfoliating is a very effective way to get those dead skin cells out and reveal the fresh, glowing, and vibrant skin underneath.
Now there are countless brands of exfoliating face scrubs available in the market. These products can be useful, but they do have certain chemicals and preservatives that could prove to be dangerous in the long run. Moreover, if you want to get a high-end product, these scrubs can also be quite expensive.
If you like to keep things natural, then homemade face scrubs are an excellent option. Not only are they very beneficial for your skin, but they are made from ingredients that you can easily find. Moreover, they are significantly cheaper than the cosmetics found in the market, and they give you equally impressive results, if not more.
Therefore, in today’s post, we are going to talk about DIY homemade facial scrubs, and I will also mention four of my favorite face scrub recipes that you can use. So, stay tuned to learn more.
Benefits of face scrubs:
If you apply them correctly, homemade exfoliating face masks can have numerous benefits, the most prominent of which are explained below.
Smoother skin:
Exfoliating face scrubs help you get rid of dead skin cells that haven’t been shredded yet or are blocked in your pores, and this results in smoother skin, better complexion, and a more youthful appearance.
Improved blood circulation:
Applying a face scrub to your skin also improves the flow of blood to your skin. The scrubbing and massaging of your face relaxes the muscles underneath your skin, which allows more blood to pass through, which gives your skin a healthy glow.
Moreover, increased blood flow also means that more nutrients can reach your skin, which is also quite beneficial.
Unclogged pores:
Exfoliating face scrubs remove the oil and dead skin cells that are stuck in your pores, and this is great for your skin because pores clogged with dirt, dead cells, and oil lead to acne breakouts and the formation of blackheads.
Better absorption of nutrients:
As your pores are cleaned out by using face scrubs, it is easier for your skin to absorb more nutrients from the products you use in your daily skincare routine.
No preservatives or parabens:
Both parabens and preservatives are added to various cosmetics to increase their shelf life. These chemicals can be quite damaging for your skin in the long run. Parabens are known to disrupt hormone function, which can lead to various serious diseases, including skin cancer.
Therefore, using homemade face scrubs is quite beneficial
How to make a homemade face scrub?
There are various things you need to know to make and use homemade face scrubs effectively, and before we move towards the exact recipes, you should know which ingredients are right and which ones aren’t.
One thing you need to understand is that the ingredients that work for exfoliating the rest of your body aren’t necessarily good for your face as well. The skin on our face is much more sensitive, and specific ingredients need to be avoided when exfoliating it.
For instance, various natural body exfoliators have ingredients like sea salt, coffee grounds, and sometimes even ground nutshells. These types of components can be too rough for your skin, and they can cause irritated and red skin. In some cases, harsh ingredients can also scratch or break the skin, which increases the risk of infections and pimples.
How to apply homemade face scrubs:
The procedure to use homemade face masks and scrubs is quite simple. Like any other face scrub, apply it on your face in a circular motion for about a minute, and gently massage your face. The massage is essential, and it has various benefits for the skin.
Even full body massage can be useful for your skin, as it increases blood circulation, aids the removal of toxins, and reduces stress. Therefore, how about investing in a massage chair. You can sit in your massage chair while applying your homemade facial scrub for double the positive effects.
One complaint that I commonly hear from people using massage chairs is that they are made in a standard size, and tall people can’t get the entire benefits of them. Therefore, you should look for adjustable massage chairs for tall people.
My favorite homemade face scrub recipes:
The banana and turmeric face scrub:
This is one of the most effective face scrubs you can make at home. It has turmeric, which is a well-known natural antiseptic. It helps in repairing rough skin, and it enables you to get rid of harmful bacteria.
Bananas have a healthy dose of potassium and vitamin A, which aids in skin-cell turnover. If you have oily skin, you can also add some baking soda to the scrub, which will help get the excess oil out of your pores.
Finally, you should also add some honey to the scrub, which will give it some structure, and make it easier to apply.
Ingredients:
- One whole banana
- Turmeric (1/2 teaspoon)
- Baking soda (1/2 teaspoon)
- Honey (1 teaspoon)
Directions:
- Start by mashing the banana in a bowl, and then add in a teaspoon each of turmeric and baking soda
- Add in a teaspoon of honey, and mix the scrub thoroughly.
- Apply it on your face and gently massage in circles for at least 60 seconds.
- Wash off the scrub with lukewarm water.
The honey and oats face scrub:
Though honey is used as a base in many face scrubs, it is quite beneficial for the skin on its own as well. Honey acts as both an exfoliator and a moisturizer, and it also can balance the bacteria on your skin.
Oats are added to this scrub to give it texture, which allows it to shed your dead skin cells more effectively. However, remember to grind the oats finely so that they aren’t too coarse.
If you have dry skin, you can also add a bit of oil to the scrub. Jojoba oil is a good option.
Ingredients:
- Uncooked and finely ground plain oats (1/4 cup)
- Raw honey (1/8 cup)
- Jojoba oil (1/8 cup)
Directions
- Grind the oats to create a fine powder. You can use a coffee grinder or a food processor.
- Warm the honey in the microwave so that it is easier to mix.
- Combine all the ingredients in a small bowl.
- Apply the scrub to your face for about a minute and massage gently. Rinse off the scrub once you are done
Apple and honey scrub
This face scrub is perfect for oily and acne-prone skin. We already know the benefits of honey, but apples are also an excellent ingredient for face scrubs. Apples have natural acids and enzymes which exfoliate your skin and also aid in the removal of excess oil.
Ingredients
- One apple (peeled and pitted)
- Raw organic honey (1/2 tbsp)
- Jojoba oil (1/2 tsp)
Directions:
- Firstly, puree the apple in a food processor. Keep the texture smooth, but not runny
- Mix some warm honey and jojoba oil with the apple puree in a small bowl
- Apply on your face, in circular motions for about 60 seconds, and leave on for an additional 5 minutes for better results
- Rinse off the scrub with some warm water
Oatmeal and citrus face scrub:
Because of the citrus fruits, this is another face scrub that is very good for oily skin, and it can help get rid of the dead skin cells that are trapped in your pores because of excess oils. Meanwhile, the oatmeal provides texture to the scrub and soothes the skin as well.
Instead of honey, egg whites are used in this face scrub. You can also use honey, but egg whites can be quite nutritious for the skin, and they also keep the scrub together when you apply it on your skin.
Ingredients:
- Orange juice (2 tbsp)
- Cooked and cooled oatmeal (1/2 cup)
- One egg (whites only)
Directions:
- Cook some oatmeal and let it cool down completely.
- Take half a cup and mix it with the orange juice and egg whites.
- Apply the mixture on your face and scrub for 60 seconds, then leave it on for an additional 5 minutes for better oil removal
- Wash off the scrub with some warm water.
So, there were some of my favorite face scrub recipes that are perfect for both men and women. I hope you find this post helpful and informative.
